Welcome to the "Who Killed Albus Dumbledore?" Live Journal experience.
We had to cut some and shorten others of the original threads while editing the book - but here we've archived the entire LJ exchange. And more - because once we got started we didn't want to stop. ;D
(During the archiving process dates and some headings were altered.)
Enjoy!

Oh, don't you see yon turtle dove
Sitting high in a tree?
Mourning for her own true love
As I will mourn for thee, as I will mourn for thee...
As Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince (HBP) opens, Nymphadora Tonks mopes. Tragically. Her hair isn't properly pink. There are all sorts of changes in her demeanor, behavior, and even her Patronus. And she never trips anymore - it's like her heart's just not in it.
Turns out she's pining for that spineless fidget, Remus Lupin.
"No, no!" quoth he: he and his aging desires are too dangerous for a fit young Auror who can legally turn into a lycanthrope-immune animal. Erm. "No, no!" quoth he: without him she shall be safer in time of War, for she may then sit upon a cushion and sew a fine seam. Erm. Right. "Look, Tonks" quoth he, "It's not you, it's me, OK?"
And then JKR associated romance with red herrings in mystery stories, during one of those interviews.
So there are truly ingenious theories that Tonks' relatives (Narcissa, Draco, maybe even Bellatrix!) have been channeling their inner Nymphadora, using Polyjuice potion. And that poor Tonks lies chained in a Malfoy dungeon, while all her pals shrug off the gaffs of her impersonator(s) as lovesickness.
Oh, don't you see yon turtle dove...
When JKR tempts me to watch the birdy, I find it's important to mind where I'm putting my feet. ;D
